Developed specifically for wine trade professionals, this is a unique opportunity to learn more about Ribera del Duero and its wines from Ray O'Connor MW.

-----

Join us for an intimate virtual tasting session hosted by Ray O'Connor on Thursday 26th September at 10am where you will explore Ribera del Duero's terroir, grape varieties and their approach to viticulture and vinification.

Ahead of the masterclass, you will receive:

  • A zoom link to access the 1hr15mins masterclass
  • 6 samples of Ribera del Duero wines
  • Ribera del Duero merchandise to support the session

The session will begin with an introduction to the region, highlighting the 4 pillars; unique terroirs, grape varieties, climate and winemaking expertise. Following this, we will delve into the impact of the region's altitude, seen as the 5th pillar, on the winemaking process and the resulting wines.

Topics we will explore include the effects of increased UV rays on the colour concentration and tannins of the grapes, the influence of diurnal range on ripening and acidity levels, and the challenges and benefits for winemakers and vines when cultivating grapes at altitudes of 720 to 1,000 meters above sea level.

"A lot has changed in the 40 years since the region was granted the status of D.O., with the aim to create great wines, to enhance the value of the area, and to differentiate and reinvent itself. It’s ten founding wineries of 1982 have increased to 317 wineries of today, with nearly 8,000 wine growers and over 27,000 hectares. Nearly a quarter of vineyards are older than 50 years, the climate can be harsh and extreme, and in some areas altitudes exceed 1000m above sea level - together this results in extraordinary wines.

And we are seeing demand for these wines increasing. Sales increased from 2020-2021 by over 30% in value - with the expectation that there is still plenty of growth. We hope you will help us build on this success story."

This is set to be fun and informative tastings of Ribera del Duero wines that’ll help expand your knowledge and allow you to discover the intricacies of the grapes, climate, soils and vinification techniques in the region.
