Roa, November 22, 2023 - "Ribera del Duero is undoubtedly one of the most remarkable success stories in the world of wine". So catalogs the prestigious critic, journalist and wine expert Tim Atkin MW in his new and third Special Report 'Ribera del Duero 2023'.
"In just four decades it has achieved impressive things. And the best is yet to come," augurs the British critic about the DO. "The more I visit Ribera del Duero, the more I become convinced of its quality and diversity. The white wines improve with each vintage, although it is the reds that are mainly responsible for the region's well-deserved worldwide reputation," Atkin assures after sharing his new Top 100 Ribera del Duero. A ranking that has been part of his professional career for the last few years and which attests to his exhaustive knowledge of both the region and its wines.
During his September visit to the Ribera del Duero region, Tim Atkin sampled 552 wines, including reds, whites, and rosés. Key figures like Cesar Maté, Jesús and Sara Sastre, and Dani Pérez played a significant role in Atkin's exploration of the region's climate, grape varieties, and terroir through vineyard visits. Out of the 552 wines, 100 received a score of 94 points or higher, with three reaching 98 points and one achieving an impressive 99 points. Atkin notes the evolving nature of the region, emphasizing the increasing freshness and terroir expression in the best reds. He describes them as becoming "refined and subtle." The report also highlights affordable wines and exciting discoveries for Master of Wine (MW) enthusiasts. Atkin concludes that Ribera del Duero is currently experiencing a positive moment due to improved viticulture, a redefined sense of balance, and a talented group of winemakers leading the way.
